Southern California Pelvic Pain Center:

Information on Pelvic Pain

About Us

Southern California Pelvic Pain Center was founded in 2011 to treat sexual dysfunction in women. Our compassionate and experienced staff trained specifically in female sexual health treats the medical, cognitive, and behavior elements leading to painful intercourse. The approach ensures the successful resolution of both recent and enduring problems. You will meet and confer with a licensed and certified gynecologist to diagnose any medical conditions, a sex therapist to help you or you and your partner talk out any issues or discomforts regarding your sex life, and a physical therapist to alter your body's reaction during intercourse.

There is a tendency among women with sexual dysfunctions to feel alone and/or ashamed. Our renowned staff will be with you at every step in the treatment of your dysfunction to let you know that you are not alone and that you should feel no shame. Don't be another silent sufferer!
We treat Vaginismus, Dyspareunia, Vulvodynia, Vulvar Vestibulitis, Myofascial Pelvic Pain Syndrome, and Lichen Sclerosus.

What Can I Expect?

Our five day program in sunny Los Angeles addresses all aspects of sexual dysfunction. You will first meet with Dr. Kerri Parks, a practicing OB-GYN, who will complete an evaluation. Our evaluation process includes an interview and review of outside medical records as well as a physical examination. This allows us to determine if you have a diagnosable medical condition as well as giving us insight into your particular case. We can then tailor a schedule that is right for you, whether more tests need to be run or if you would benefit more from seeing either the sex therapist or physical therapist next.

We realize the idea of sex therapy can be intimidating. However, there are often both physical and emotional elements relating to sexual problems. After ruling out easily treated medical conditions, you will meet with our sex therapist to uncover the causes and stresses of your sexual condition. Our highly regarded therapist is a licensed clinical psychologist and sex therapist with extensive training and experience in relationship, trauma, and sex therapy.

As a professor of human sexuality and advocate for trauma survivors, her clinical practice is dedicated to empowering men and women to embrace their sexuality and have healthy relationships. Some issues that sex therapy can help you work through include, but are not limited to: sexual trauma, communicating with your partner about sex, conflicting levels of desire in a couple, problems resulting from long periods of inactivity, problems resulting from infidelities, and the stress and anxiety you feel in regards to sex.

Finally, our physical therapy includes an evaluation of your history, a musculoskeletal exam and pelvic floor muscle and connective tissue exam. Based on Heather' s findings in her evaluation, she will create a personalized intensive physical therapy treatment for your time with us. You will spend about two and a half hours a day with Heather where she will treat, educate, develop an individualized home exercise program, and do long term planning with you.

Treatment

Treatment Through Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy aims at reducing the muscle spasm and connective tissue restrictions associated with many of these diagnoses. Oftentimes a dilator (or dilator set) is required as part of the home exercise program. Many women who have attempted dilators in the past may not have been successful due to improper instruction and/or use of this powerful tool. A Multidisciplinary approach is ultimately needed to eliminate the cause of pain. In some instances, follow-up sessions beyond the 5-day intensive program may be necessary, and will be discussed on an individual basis.
